| In Shiprock, just outside the town is a 1700 foot eroded volcanic plume. This is a sacred place for the Navaho community. The Navaho call this interesting formation, Tse Bi dahi, or rock with wings. There is an ancient myth which speaks of a great bird that once rose from beneath the feet of the Navaho and became the spirit of a large bird that once transported the ancestral Navaho. The "site" is deemed to have magical powers as well. The power and grace of a formidable wall of volcanic rock to my left helped me frame and create this powerful image and hopefully capture the spirit of Shiprock as well. The crystal clear blue sky above made this, my vision quest. This is a place where young Indian boys make the transformation to manhood.
